MAD – Additive Design Metamorphosis

Project code: ARS01 00717
Notice: Prot. n. 1735 of 13/07/2017 issued by MUR (Ministry of the University and Research)
Funder: MUR (European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of PON R&I 2014-2020 – Axis 2 – Action II – OS 1.b) and FSC (Protected Concession Decree no. 1547 of 29/09/2020)
Period: May 2023 – November 2025
Budget Dhitech: € 1.600.000,00

The MAD project develops the concept of Design as an innovative process of workflow that, starting from the definition of the specifications of the final products, is declined in the development of advanced computing systems that allow the synthesis and optimization of new materials related to the products themselves in the field of comsumer, home living, automotive and aerospace. The innovative processes, developed and optimized for the additive production of integrated design components, are integrated with specific electronic controls to increase their productivity and optimize the resources involved. The new design process takes into account all the reference topics such as the concepts of circular economy and product life management so as to become a large integrated process, which, thanks to an efficient computer link between the various stages, leads desirablely to the global market.

The design of a product contains a high set of studies such as ergonomics, usability, pre-production, environmental impact, disposal, production and exercise costs, the choice of materials and their structural and chemical-physical properties. The initial theoretical controversies on the role of design (both on the aesthetic side and on the political-ideological side) found a resolute synthesis in an effective definition of Tomàs Maldonado: "Design is a design activity that consists in determining the formal properties of objects produced industrially, by formal properties, having to understand not only the external characteristics, but above all the functional and structural relationships that make an object a coherent unity both from the producer and user point of view".

The project is part of a strong development of additive technologies in the industrial sector in the automotive, aeronautical and aerospace, home living, comsuming and interior design with a tendency of enterprises to orientate towards solutions as much as possible consolidated and standardized, however recent, in order to minimize the risks of investments decidedly honest for most of them. In this context, the project aims to define new technology development lines in each direction and in each application sector involved: innovative materials such as metal alloys and charged resins, experimental processes such as new metal material deposition technologies, and innovative end-use components as an integration of electronic components to further expand the potential of use. The proposed partnership, through the exploitation of the transversal know-how, which is intrinsically endowed, therefore trusts to be able to provide pioneering and highly innovative technological solutions, potentially able to open new spaces in the current market and to guarantee a global strategic advantage to the companies involved and the derived industrial induced. The aim is to coordinate the project, a process of technological transfer in the context of the themes carried out, directed to the industrial fabric of the territory.
